The main motivation for this project was the search for alternatives to the daily disposal of fish scales in landfills. An extensive bibliographical research allowed a deeper understanding of this material and what has already been produced from it. After collecting and analysing data, the testing and determination of variables regarding a larger scale production was followed. Throughout the process, efforts were made to guarantee the durability of the fish scales without compromising their unique aesthetic qualities and a sustainable production. The created earrings reveal the richness of discarded fish scales that are displayed as precious material, revealing the importance of extending the life cycle of materials.

Glass fusion with fish scales and brass elements.
The Municipality of Matosinhos provided all sorts of inspiration and it was sought to create artefacts that reflected its identity, while responding to sustainable social and environmental requirements. Among multiple experiments with discarded fish scales, their inclusion in discarded glass stood out for its appealing result. This technique proposes a new life for a surplus materials.
Thus, Maré collection was created, displaying a set of earrings and pendants in bluish tones – an allusion to the Portuguese sea.

We Won’t Waste You proposes a learning methodology supported by projects that connect students to society and the environment through innovation. Matosinhos is known for its sea breeze and fishing tradition: field research was carried out along its coast, and led to the idea of collecting discarded fish scales in local markets and fishmongers. It was possible to recognize the captivating appearance of this material of a light tone and pearlescent shine. The fish scales were hot pressed without the addition of any binders – and with these it was possible to create Escama jewelry line.
